After four years in business, Wingham Takeaway proprietor Robyn Tisdell still enjoys bringing her customers new things to try.

With the intense heat of summer wilting most of Wingham, Robyn thought it was an opportune time to introduce Peter’s range of soft scoop ice-cream to town.

It’s been three weeks since the new ice-cream counter went in and already Robyn and Bev are getting a feel for what their customers prefer.

There are nine flavours to choose from including classic mint and a rather tempting looking Hokey Pokey.

But so far the Triple Swirl is the hot (or should we say cold) favourite.

“The kids love this one!” Robyn said.

Pleasing the younger population of Wingham is something Robyn has always strived to do at Wingham Takeaway.

She enjoys the high school kids popping in on Friday afternoons and welcomes them to hang out in the cafe.

“There’s not many places they can do that these days,” she said.

“But they are all really well behaved and well mannered.”

To cater for the rush, Robyn goes out of her way to ensure she has up to the minute products to suit a student budget.

There’s always hot chips to share and the drinks cabinet is stocked with a huge range of the latest flavours.

For example Jelly Fanta. 

“It tastes like Fanta but has jelly in it,” explains Robyn.

“I love the fun of that.”

Fun is something that Wingham Takeaway has become well known for.

It’s a jovial environment at the best of times but some days the fun is amped to the max.

These days are dress up days.

Think Halloween or Wear Orange Wednesday and you can guarantee Robyn and Bev look like they’ve raided the local theatre company’s costume department.

“It’s expected now,” laughts Robyn.

“People look forward to the silliness here.”

In fact with Valentines Day fast approaching Robyn has been planning for the big day though she remains tight lipped about her costume.

Robyn worked at Taree’s Charcoal Chicken for years before taking the plunge to run her own business.

It’s a decision she’s still pleased she made with her business continuing to go from strength to strength.

A lot of hard work goes into Wingham Takeaway’s food as the potato scallops, fish and pluto pups are handmade and battered on site.

Chips remain the biggest seller with estimates of more than 500 kg of chips being made a week.

Also proving popular is the introduction of family meal deals and of course Robyn hasn’t forgotten her smallest customers – she now offers a range of mini snack packs for children.
