On Saturday, Brett is set to compete in rodeo events for the first time in 4 years since a horrific accident that left him fighting for life.
Three days after the 2013 Wingham Rodeo, Brett was performing routine cattle work in Lansdowne when his horse, known as Teddy, bucked and threw him off - splitting his pelvis in the process.
He was rushed to Newcastle’s John Hunter Hospital where medical staff worked to save his life.
He had a steel plate permanently inserted and was confined to a wheelchair for four months to allow future mobility on his road to recovery.
Teddy is the horse Brett will be riding at the rodeo on Saturday.
“I’m super proud of the horse and me,” Brett said.
Brett is confident for the first time since the accident he is at ‘100 per cent’ and ready to take on the steer wrestling category at the rodeo.
This event will see Brett and his hazer (another person on a horse) trap a steer between them before he jumps off and wrestles it to the ground.
When asked about what drives him to compete again, Brett had only one quick fire response.
“It’s pretty much the love of it, just the adrenaline rush. I absolutely love everything about it,” Brett said.
With his rehabilitation period over, Brett wants to encourage others in a similar situation to get back to doing what they love.
“Just never give up,” Brett said.
Despite beginning his career in rodeo 20 years ago, Brett remains humble about being referred to as a veteran.
“We never really push that too hard as we just do the local events and have a bit of fun.”
Brett said he has great gratitude for the support shown by his wife Kellie, children Madison, Colby and Amelia and his hazer Geoff Cribb.
He would also like to thank his sponsors Taree Off Road and LJ Hooker Harrington for their support.
The 2017 Wingham Summertime Rodeo is on this Saturday at the Wingham Showground.
Gates open at 12pm with tickets $15 for adults, $10 for pensioners and 12-17 year olds, $5 children 5 to 11 years and children under 5 are free.
