In early November, it was announced that four Wingham junior golfers, Reid Brown, Adam Rylewski, Connor Hughes and Danny Bisby, have been selected for the Lower North Coast (LNC) junior golf pennants team, and will be competing in the NSW pennant finals next month.
The team comprises six players and one reserve selected from clubs from Port Macquarie south to Bulahdelah and west to Gloucester.
Only four teams compete at the State pennants, with two selected from Sydney metropolitan teams, and two from country/regional areas. The winning team at State will then compete in Brisbane.
For four of the seven team members to come from one club is no mean feat.
“It is a big effort to get four out of the one club,” Wingham Golf Club director Ray Bisby said.
“We’ll have three [in the team] - Danny, Adam, Reid, and Connor will be reserve, I would say.”
To say Ray is proud of the four boys is an understatement,
“Danny and Connor, they’ve probably only just had a good six months of competition,” Ray said of their rapid progression.
Danny is Ray’s son, and at 14 is the youngest in the team. Adam, Reid and Connor are all currently transitioning to year 12. All four attend Wingham High School.
Reid Brown is no stranger to the pressures of competition golf, with many years of the sport under his belt locally, in the Combined High Schools competition, and as an open pennants player at Pymble Golf Club.
On being selected for the team, Adam said, “I kind of knew that I was just in the bubble, sort of thing, but wasn’t really expecting that to happen. I was one of the juniors around the district. I’ve been playing seriously about two years.”
The three year 12 students are good mates, with both Connor and Adam crediting “Chopper Reid” (their nickname for Reid) for their interest and ‘coaching’. It is Reid they have credited for them ‘catching the bug’.
But it’s not all serious competition for the boys.
