Hot on the heels of news of a kitchen makeover being completed in the hall, it was announced that the Association has received a $17,800 Stronger Communities grant to assist in a much-needed renovation of the hall.
An extension of 6 x 2.5 metres to the rear corner of the hall will be constructed to marry with the existing structure. The construction will also address the problem of the rotting weatherboards on the external walls.
The extension will be used as a storage facility for furniture with future plans to incorporate a unisex disabled toilet and a single standard toilet in part of the extension.
The funding will cover the cost of materials, labour and Council fees, with the Association covering the cost of electrical work and painting.
Association member Jennie Cameron described the announcement of the win as “very exciting for us.”
She also said it was unexpected as there were only 17 successful applications from 76 submissions.
“When we heard that, we thought ‘oh well, that’s us gone’,” Jennie said.
The successful applicants were told of their wins via email, and Jennie said she had to read it a dozen times before it sunk in.
The project will be completed in 2017, as it is one of the conditions of the Stronger Communities Grant Program.
The second round of $500,000 in grant funding will be made available in the middle of next year, for projects to be undertaken in 2018.
“The second part of our Stronger Communities Grant Program is yet to come, and we look forward to welcoming applications again around June next year”, said Paul De Szell, MidCoast Council director Community Spaces and Services.
