Welcome to the weekly Wingham Golf Club report. Despite the course being in excellent condition, we need some rain. With the farmers also praying for some decent rain, maybe the weather gods can work some magic.

Single stableford ‘lefties versus righties’
On to the golf and last Saturday the Lefties played the Righties in a single Stableford for the Hynes trophy.
Unfortunately the threat of rain scared a few players away and only 45 turned up.
Despite the small field you needed at least 40 points to stand on the winners dias.
Adam Beattie was the star performer, returning 42 points, the best on the day.
Due to the small field, only two grades operated and A-grade winner was Reid Brown with a sub par round for 40 points on a countback from runner-up Steve Abbott.
In B-grade John Turner’s 41 points beat John Aldous on a countback.
Nearest to the pins were not up to normal standards but “shot of the day” was a good one with John Turner capping off a good day with a win on the 7th/16th Bayview Seafoods hole.
Other winners were Adam Beattie on the 3rd/12th caddies hole, Cam Darby the All About Conveyancing 4th/13th and Damien Moore had a double after his approach shots to the Wingham Plaza Butchers 1st/10th and the Bent on Food 9th/18th holes.
Wednesday veterans
A great field of 60 players played a single Stableford last week with Steve Wheatley the winner with a mammoth 44 points.
For the second week in a row, Graham troth was runner-up, this week with 41 points. Hang in there Trothy.
Sandy Dunn (well) was third with 39 points on a countback. In the nearest to the pins competition, Trothy also had a win, this time on the tricky 3rd/12th hole. The other winner was Paul Ryan after his great approach to the 7th/16th par three.
Wednesday ambrose
With the days getting longer the ambrose fields are starting to increase with 55 players this week. Of the 15 groups to hit off nine were under par, three at six under par.
Winners after handicap were members of the “Operators” team with Tim Smith as captain.
They won by a full shot from runners-up “Cutters” (Andrew Stone), also at six under par.
Third spot went to “Brock’s Best” (Ben McLeod), just one twelfth of a shot in front of “Browns plus one” (Reid Brown).
Tim Smith completed a great day, also winning the NTP on the third hole. Peter Strahan did win many friends after winning the Port in the lucky draw in his first game back for a long time.
Thursday LJ Hooker Chook Run
With the weather improving Thursday 33 players turned up Thursday for the Chook Run.
Scoring was high and very close.
Best on the day was Syd Gilfillan with 23 points on a countback from the “masseuse” Craig Harrison.
One shot back in third was Rod Walch in good form lately. Katrina Greenaway is also playing well off her low handicap (now five),claiming fourth with a well compiled 21 points.
Then came a multitude of players on 20 points with Pat Whiteley the only one to get some money. Unfortunately Tom Hadwell and John Thorburn missed out on a countback.
NTP winners were Jim Bradshaw on the short third hole and Craig Harrison must have got a lucky bounce on the seventh to win that NTP.
Friday ladies nine holes
Marcia Fowler showed glimpses of good form last week and continued with that this week with 26 huge points for the nine holes. Marcia won by six shots (unheard of Marcia) from runner-up the consistent Debbie Stewart. Ruth Woodward and Jan Baker also played well, each winning a ball with 18 points. Elaine Findler won the NTP with a good shot.
Coming events
This Saturday is a fourball best ball in with a single stableford in conjunction for the Schweppes trophy. See you there.
Good luck and good golfing.
