Scowen showed class in top-scoring with 89 of Wingham’s 8/239 before Ryan Williams snared 5/39, skittling the United batting for 169 in reply.
Scowen only arrived in Wingham last week, fresh from a stint with Congleton in the Cheshire second division in England where he topped their batting stats. Raised in Mount Gambier before attending Adelaide High School, the left hander played most recently in Tongala, Victoria, prior to heading to the Old Dart. He now calls Bungay home.
With Matt Essery unavailable, Brock Hynes captained the side and chose to bat first after winning the toss. Jye Kliendienst made five of a 17 run opening partnership with Wayne Smoothy. Scowen came to the crease at number three and after a watchful start he dispatched four boundaries with crisp drives before being gifted a life when dropped at mid on. From there he never looked back as he and Smoothy remained unbeaten at drinks with the score 1/96. Smoothy posted a fine half century, (six fours), upon resumption, before being stumped for 51, having added 98 with Scowen. Hynes made 10 before he too was stumped, and replaced by Mick Stinson. On taking his second single Stinson brought up 6000 career runs for Wingham in a notable milestone, only the second Wingham player to do so. He went on to make 22 in typical fashion, adding 59 with Scowen, who passed 50 when clubbing three consecutive sixes from the bowling of Corey Harper.
Ryan Morris could manage only one and then Scowen was caught in the deep in the 37th over, chasing his ton. In all he hit 58 runs in boundaries with five sixes and seven fours in a powerful knock.
Robbie Hynes (6) and Jake Mullen (0) fell to Jackson Witts on consecutive balls before Williams clubbed 19 not out (two sixes, one four) and Steve Allwood 6 not out to post the run-a-ball total.
Ricky Campbell returned the best figures for United with 4/51 while Witts took 3/52.
Williams made an immediate impact with the ball when he bowled both Josh Ferris (5) and Ricky Campbell (0) in his second over. He then held a sharp return catch to dismiss Murray McCartney for 15 to reduce United to 3/37 in the ninth over. Stinson had Matt Collier caught for 32 to have United teetering on 4/78.
Requiring eight runs per over proved too great a task for United, not withstanding useful contributions by Witts (20), Harper (20), Laurie Weeks (29) and Scott Saunders (26) as the Wingham bowlers combined in restricting boundaries. Williams came back and finished the innings with consecutive balls in a man of the match performance. Stinson returned 2/28, Steve Allwood 1/32, Beau Reed 0/19 and Brock Hynes 1/16 in a solid bowling display.
