“Everyone thinks it’s bigger!” he said.
Visitors have been surprised to discover just how much of a difference a lick of paint and some reupholstery can make to the look and feel of the building. Walls and doors are lighter and everything is certainly brighter.
Work started a few weeks ago with a Work for the Dole crew employed to do work to the interior as well as the course.
The crew made a surprising discovery when they pulled up the old carpet finding beautifully polished timber underneath. Not much work will need to be done to have the floor looking fantastic and with the lighter walls Gary admits the floor will be a real feature.
Renovations are expected to be completed by the end of October and plans are underway for a grand opening for members. The newly refreshed facilities will also lend themselves to new opportunities with the club hoping to host a wedding expo later in the year.
The renovations are taking place in the midst of negotiations for an amalgamation with Wingham Bowling Club.
“It is still in the pipeline but we have other priorities at this stage,” admits Gary.
“We want to get this building up and functional and by then hopefully grants may come to the fore to construct the bowling greens,” he said.
“We want it to happen but we want it to happen properly.”
At the moment it is business as usual at Wingham Golf Club and Gary is hoping the makeover will attract back some of the customers the club has lost over the past few years.
Gary cites somewhat old and inefficient air conditioning as a major reason many folks have stopped coming to the club.
Fortunately a brand new air conditioning system has been installed which Gary thinks will make a noticeable difference for visitors.
“We’ve let our customer’s down by not having good air conditioning,” said Gary.
“Now we’re working on a venue for customers to enjoy.”
