Saturday Wingham Cellars Single Stableford
A field of 65 players competed in misty weather last Saturday and it was vets captain Bill Osborne who emerged the winner with 40 points.
Bill won by one shot from B-grade nett winner Steve Abbott. A-grade went to Syd Gilfillan whose 38 on a countback included an eagle on the par four sixth hole. That was a five pointer so it came in handy.
C-grade nett was won by Garry Masters, also with 38 points. Nett runners-up included Reid Brown (A-grade with 38 points), Adam Rylewski (B-grade 38 c/b) and Brian Haynes (C-grade with 36 on a c/b). Denise Polley won the ladies with 36 points.
In the ball comp Cliff Beattie won the last ball with 35 on a countback. Nearest to the pins were as competitive as usual with “Shot of the day” going to Dave Irvine with his approach to the Bayview Seafoods 7th/16th hole. I think he got the putt.
Other winners included Rod Brown (Wingham Plaza Butchers 1st/10th), Jim Bradshaw (Caddies Restaurant 3rd/12th), Glenn Porter (All About Conveyancing 4th/13th) and Reid Brown (9th/18th Bent on Food).
Wednesday Veterans
There was no veterans golf this week due to the rain on Wednesday.
LJ Hooker Chook Run
With the rain still hanging around Thursday, not many golfers were expected to turn up Thursday, but surprisingly a good field of 30 played and most had a good day.
By most I mean at least two, the ‘handicapper” and the “masseuse”, had poor days, both having a bit of a hack. Jason Griffiths however, didn’t have a hack, returning his best score for a while, 21 points, to win the day. Second went to Brendon Walker with 20 points, beating Kris Mudford on a countback.
Captain Neville Blanch was fourth with 19 points, just in front of Ian Scarr and Phil Nelson, both on a countback.
The NTPs are starting to annoy yours truly a little, “knocked off” for the second week on a row on both holes. Players are going to be handicapped soon if it continues. Winners were Neville Blanch (again) on the third and Jason Griffiths on the seventh.
Being the last Thursday of the month, the LJ Hooker umbrella was decided, this month going to Jim Bradshaw with 72 points.
He just won from Tom Hadwell and John Thorburn, both on 71 points.
Coming events: This Saturday is an Irish Fourball for the Foy Family trophy. This popular event is open to all players, handicapped or not. .
