Saturday night saw the Mount George Schools of Arts come alive with the celebration of Eric Mills’ 50th birthday party. It was a super family and friends night and I’m told a complete surprise to the birthday boy. It seems he was expecting to attend an anniversary party for one of his relatives.

The large number of family members present was spread in age from very, very young to even older than Eric. It was awonderful for me, as a famiy friend, to be invited on many facets. Firstly I was privy to a very large gathering of the Mills clan, secondly I renewed friendships with many people I have been friendly with in the past and lost contact with, then there were the many younger people present whom I had the opportunity of coming in contact with during my teaching career but best of all was the feeling of being among friends and made very welcome. Thank you for inviting me into your family celebration.
During one conversation I had with a friend that night I perturbed to hear of something which occurred when she was driving along Nowendoc Road not long ago which we all should be aware of and consider the consequences of. A vehicle which had preceded hers had come in contact with a wallaby and left the dead animal on the road where other vehicles could run over it. The lady concerned stopped her car, alighted from it and removed the wallaby from the road. While doing so she noticed that it was a female and that there was a joey in the mother’s pouch. The joey was of a viable size to be hand reared so it was transported to the local vet after a call to WIRES where it was given a clear bill of health and collected by WIRES representatives afterwards.
Thanks to this well meaning person I presume that joey will be well looked after until it is re-homed either at a sanctuary or back in the wild. Always check any koala, wallaby, wombat, echidna or kangaroo which has been in an accident to be sure there is not a ‘baby on board.’
If there is please inform WIRES on 1300 094 737 or FAWNA on 6581 4141.
