Despite challenging weather during play the young golfer has achieved his biggest dream to date –being named as one of six members of the All Schools Australian Honours Team.
“It’s the highest level you can get in Australian high school golf,” said Reid’s mum Heather.
Winning a gold in the NSW stroke play in the beginning rounds of last week’s championship also made Reid fourth placed in Australia.
“We are so proud of him,” admits his mum.
The wins didn’t come easy for this determined youngster.
“The first day was beautiful weather,” laughs Heather.
Things went down hill rapidly after that.
Howling winds and pouring rain took out all of the sand in the bunkers and blew buggies into the dam.
“Everything was getting blown over, there were golf bags everywhere!”
But Reid has proven he has grit winning some major awards during his golfing career often in challenging conditions.
He finished eighth from a field of 255 at the Jack Newton NSW Junior Championships played in tough conditions on the Central Coast earlier in the year.
So last week when Reid’s ball was blown 10 metres away from the hole by a gust of wind only to be taken another five metres before he had a chance to hit it, he remained calm.
And won the hole.
“He did really well,” concludes Heather.
Reid returned from Adelaide on Saturday only to have to play pennants at Pymble Golf Club.
This is where he will now focus his attentions.
He plays in the under 21 pennants team and they’ve made it into the semi finals.
Reid plays golf everyday at Wingham Golf Club and this year he’s won the club open and junior championships and also took out the club’s open day.
Seventeen-year-old Reid has high hopes of turning pro when he’s old enough.
Until then though, school beckons.
