He regularly opens his six acre garden for charity, writes gardening columns, is a long-time president of his local garden club and last year was appointed president of the national body, The Garden Clubs of Australia.
But few people know that his passion for all things ‘gardening’ extends to the indoors.
He not only has an extensive library of well over 1000 garden books but also a large collection of vintage garden tools.
George will be sharing his love for these cherished old tools with a display at this year’s Day in the Country event.
The craftsmanship employed in making these old tools is remarkable, with many in as good a state as the day they were made, some close to 100 years old.
“I started picking up old tools at garage sales and antique shops, mainly for use in the garden but the collection has grown over the years and some items are too precious for everyday use”, George stated.
“I particularly like collecting the smaller hand tools such as old secateurs, pruning shears, forks and trowels, many I have picked up on my travels both here and overseas.
“There is something very special and deeply satisfying about handling old tools. You get a great sense of the previous owners and the history of the item.”
Killabakh’s 30th ‘Day in the Country’ will be held on Saturday September 3, 10am – 3pm, 16km north of Wingham along Comboyne Road. Entry is by gold coin donation.
Another great attraction at this year’s event is the Scarecrow Competition, with prizes in the adult and children’s sections donated by Bunnings Taree.
It’s not too late to enter - forms can be picked up from Manning Landcare Wingham or enter online at killabakh.wix.com/day-in-the-country.
A great day out is assured with more than 60 stalls, a superb selection of quality art, delicious hot and cold food on offer, plenty of seating and shade if required and the ever popular Red Cedar Band performing throughout the day.
