Known as Gulan Burray Wangi, or bat country dancers, the group performed at a number of NAIDOC celebrations around Wingham and Harrington recently.
It all started 18 months ago when some entertainment was required at a school event.
Aboriginal education officer John Taylor rallied the boys together and encouraged them to perform.
“The rest is history,” he admits.
The boys are all Aboriginal and very proud of their heritage. They dedicate themselves to a weekly practice as a dance group and have performed at numerous schools around the region including Wingham and Harrington.
School based learning of Aboriginal culture and language is strong at Wingham Public School with regular activities including didgeridoo playing, painting and art and language lessons.
The boys have also taken part in Bro Speak, an Aboriginal boys mentoring program with Uncle Russell Saunders.
