The 16-year-old year 11 student has gained a spot in the NSW team to contest the Australian All Schools Championships in Adelaide in August.

He backed this up when finishing eighth from a field of 255 at the Jack Newton NSW Junior Championships played in tough conditions on the Central Coast.

From the same tournament he was also runner up by one shot in the under 16 age division, runner up in the NSW Country junior championship and runner up in the NSW champion of champions.

In four weeks Reid has improved his handicap from scratch to +1.3.

All this started at the regional school trials played at Taree where Reid finished fourth overall after firing two over.

This earned him a place in the Hunter side to contest the State championships at Tamworth, a course he hadn’t previously played.

Players also battled rain and freezing conditions. Reid started badly, carding five over and knows this cost him a chance for overall honours. He returned three over and then one under in his last two rounds.

There was a four-way tie for first, Reid finishing three or four shots in arrears.

“Distance control,’’ he explained when asked what when wrong with his opening round.

“I hit too long.’’

However, this was still good enough to earn him a place in the State team. He played at this level in primary school and it has been his ambition to make it at high school.

This was his last chance, as he is ineligible in 2017 when he turns 18.

Reid was particularly happy with his effort in the State junior, which was also marred by torrential rain and was shortened from four rounds to three because of the weather.

There were players involved from throughout NSW and interstate. Reid’s eighth overall translated to fifth in NSW.

He’ll continue his busy schedule this weekend when he starts under 21 pennants with Pymble.

He was drafted into the club’s open pennant team this year where he was unbeaten. 

This also gave him the opportunity to play at The Australian course, which he now lists beside Bonville at Coffs Harbour as his favourite.

At Wingham this year he’s won the club open and junior championships and also took out the club’s open day. He’s also in the final of the club match play although Reid will have to fit that in with his pennant commitments at Sydney.

Eventually he wants to take the game up professionally. At the moment he plays ever day of the week.

”Even sometimes when I’m supposed to be at school,’’ he smiled.
