Emergency services were called to Henry’s Lane at Coralville, 25km north of Taree, about 11am Thursday April 21, when a Commodore station wagon was hit by a freight train.
A 30-year-old woman was the driver of the car carrying her three daughters.
Her seven-year-old daughter, travelling in the front passenger seat, and her two-year-old daughter, travelling in the middle rear seat, suffered critical head injuries.
The woman and her five-year-old daughter, who was seated behind the driver, escaped with relatively minor injuries.
All were airlifted to John Hunter Hospital; the most seriously injured girls are receiving on-going treatment.
Following an extensive investigation by the Mid North Coast Crash Investigation Unit, the driver was charged last Friday (June 24) with two counts of dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, and one count of negligent driving causing grievous bodily harm. Her driver’s licence has been suspended.
She was granted bail to appear in Newcastle Local Court on Thursday, August 4.
