The worst of these was the unfortunate postponement of the District Keno Mixed Foursomes scheduled for last Sunday.
Some players had even come to Wingham from afar a few days earlier, to get some practice, but alas the weather gods did not co-operate on the weekend and the decision was made to postpone the event to Sunday July 3.
Saturday competition
Onto last Saturday’s event, the qualifying round of the Gary Croucher Fencing 4BBB Stableford Knockout and scoring was very close.
Winners, on a countback, with 47 points, were Cam Darby and partner James King from the team of Adam “Scotty” Rylewski and Reid Brown runners-up.
This event was also the qualifying round of the Men’s District Fourball and both leading teams are unable to attend, so it is the pairing of father/son Neville and Mark Blanch with 45 points, who will represent the club at that event.
In the individual event, Rod Brown had 39 points, Josh Allen 37 and Bob Rosevear 37.
The ball competition was paid out to pairs, the last one with 42 points on a countback.
One pair who didn’t reach the final was that of Rex White and Barry Brown who must have thought it was a foursomes event, where you hit each other’s ball.
That’s exactly what they did on the first green before realising their error.
Most players back in the club later were sympathetic to their plight, except one, who said “not only were they deaf but blind as well”.
Cruel, very cruel.
The nearest to the pins were a mixed lot, but “shot of the day” was a beauty.
That belonged to Rod Brown with his approach to win the Wingham Plaza Butchers prize on the 1st/10th hole.
Other great shots belonged to Bill Osborne on the Bent on Food 9th/18th, Cam Darby on the Bayview Seafoods 7th/16th, Jim Bradshaw the All About Conveyancing 4th/13th and finally the Wingham Remedial Massage 3rd/12th went to John Aldous. Interesting to note, all those players are in the veteran class.
Wednesday veterans
Another great field of players turned out Wednesday morning in the McDonalds sponsored single Stableford, with funds raised going to McDonald’s House Charity.
It was the day for the Scots as Sandy Mc Dunn was the winner with 41 big points. Sandy won by two shots from runner-up Trevor Burns. In third spot, Rex White made a successful return from injury, his 38 points narrowly in front of several others on 37.
NTP winners included former Wingham “Tiger” Terry Morris, whose tee shot on the 3rd/12th hole was less than “two feet” from the hole. Ron Wilson was the other sharpshooter, winning the 7th/16th with a good shot.
Thursday LJ Hooker Chook Run
Forty one players enjoyed magnificent conditions last Thursday and boy, was scoring competitive. Nine players scored from 20 to 22 points, seven of which were “in the money.” Winner, with 22 on his own, was Graham Lewis. Well played and about time Graham.
Then came four players all on 21 points, Sandy McDunn, Cam Darby, Dave Stackpool and Jim Bradshaw (fifth) all separated on countback. Of the four others on 20 points, only Ken Squires (sixth) and Terry Wood (seventh) shared in the prize money.
The unlucky other two on 20 points, were Rod Brown and Neville Blanch. Oh, what a shame. However, would you believe the two winners of the NTP’s were Rod Brown (3rd) and Neville Blanch (7th). Damn it, what a shame.
With two rounds in June remaining, the leaders of the LJ Hooker June umbrella are Barry Brown (59), Tim Smith (57), Ken Squires (56), Jim Bradshaw (55) and Tom Hadwell on 54.
Coming events
This Saturday is a single Stableford event sponsored by Barry Brown. Tuesday the 28th is the 2016 Club Mixed Foursomes with quite a good rollup.
Good luck and good golfing.
