IN an exciting addition to the Manning Regional Art Gallery's exhibition program, the Archibald Prize 2015 is opening at the gallery on March 5, 2016.
The Archibald Prize is an Art Gallery of New South Wales touring exhibition and Australia's leading portraiture competition.
High profile, eagerly anticipated and often controversial, the Archibald Prize for portraiture dates back 94 years and was established in 1921 by J.F. Archibald.
Awarded to the best painting of a notable Australian, the Archibald Prize is a who's who of Australian culture, from politicians and celebrities to musicians and artists.
This year, just a few of the famous faces you can expect to see include Daniel Johns, Paul Kelly and Jenny Kee.
Each year, the trustees of the Art Gallery of NSW judge the prize and the winning artist is awarded $100,000. With this, the finalists are exhibited at the Art Gallery of NSW before embarking on a year-long regional tour.
Manning Regional Art Gallery director, Noella Lopez is thrilled to be able to bring the prestigious Archibald Prize 2015 to our local gallery.
"This is a fantastic opportunity for locals and visitors to the region to experience and enjoy what the Archibald Prize 2015 has to offer, right here in our community," Noella said.
Be the first to see the Archibald in a private viewing on Friday March 4 between 2-4pm. Tickets are limited and pre-booked only $25 (includes entry and light refreshments).
The Official Opening will take place on Saturday March 5 from 5-8pm. Tickets are limited and pre-booked only $50 (which will include entry, canapes and one drink). Mayor Paul Hogan will open the exhibition with special guest Bruno Jean Grasswill, AGNSW Packer's Prize and People's Choice winner.
The Archibald Prize will be exhibited at the gallery from the March 7 to April 17 from Tuesdays to Saturdays, 10am to 4pm and Sundays 1pm to 4pm (closed Easter weekend).
Tickets prices will be adults $10, members/concessions $7, under 16 free and groups of 10 or more $7 each.
