WINGHAM came out on top but it was an excellent game against Old Bar and a great way to start off the season. Every kid (and every parent) came away with a smile on their face. The future for local cricket is in good hands with players like these one day playing first grade!

Wingham won the toss and elected to bat. Old Bar reached 42 before they lost their first wicket, caught and bowled Jack Shepherd in his first junior competitive game. The next batsman, Lachlan Cross, was retired on 16 and then no Old Bar batter reached double figures on their way to a total of 2-90 with five other batsmen retired by coach Chris Dempsey in an act of sportsmanship to give all their kids a bat. Jack took the second wicket (bowled). Dylan Mitchell, Nathan Smith and Joshua Rees bowled maidens - Tyler Duke and Aiden Horsington did well in their first games of competitive cricket as well.
Wingham’s innings didn’t start well. Dylan stepped up from last year to open the batting and was adjudged LBW to a brute of a ball for 2, while Nathan – batting champion from 2015 – was run out for 0 with the total on 5. Step in Joshua Rees to join James Creighton to then put on a 78 run partnership and both retire when they reached 30 by the rule, but by then they’d all but set up the win for Wingham. Solid contributions came then from Calum McKinnon and Miranda Fuller to post 6-105 by the end of play, but again all kids got a bat and contributed to the win. Praise to Twiggy Payne and newbie Mel Mitchell who scored. Next week Wingham come up against Great Lakes at Wingham Central next Saturday. Play starts at 8.30am. Please come along and cheer both sides for a great mornings entertainment.
