They had played in the first week of the final series, with a win to the Sharks by 34-6. The other two meetings during the season saw a draw and a two point win to the Sharks.
The game began after a minute's silence in memory of Ricky Chapman, a former Wingham Tiger who passed away during the week.
The Tigers started slowly, and were trailing 12-0 after a quarter of an hour with two barge over tries by the big front-rower for the home team.
The the Sharks were reduced to 12 players after the second rower was sent off.
A penalty goal five minutes later made the score 14-0.
Wingham finally got on the scoreboard when Tyler Atkins scored in the corner.
A try right on half time to the Sharks made the score 18-4 at the break.
Six minutes into the second half, Jordan Saunders scored from dummy half on the last tackle to reduce the deficit to 10 points.
A quarter of an hour into the second stanza, Brad Sowter scored out wide.
A minute later, the scores were level at 18-18 after a kick from Justin Berry bounced back into the arms of Tyler Atkins who scored under the posts. Jordan Saunders added the extra points.
With a quarter of an hour remaining, Michael Bailey went on a 60 metre run to score beside the posts. With the conversion by Jordan Saunders, the Tigers were in front by 24-18.
Then the Sharks scored in the corner to reduce their deficit to just two points with ten minutes remaining.
From a scrum win, Michael Bailey score out wide to make the score 28-22.
A penalty 40 metres out with only four minutes remaining gave Michael Bailey a chance to win the game. But the kick hit the upright and bounced back, but was knocked on by the Port Macquarie player.
Three plays later, Wingham were awarded a penalty close to the posts to seal victory. Jordan Saunders sprayed the kick well wide.
From the 20 metre drop-out, the Sharks found touch 40 metres out from Wingham's goal line. And on their last play, with just seconds on the clock, scored a try. The conversion after the siren saw the game go into golden point extra time.
The Tigers squandered an early chance to win.
Then after a penalty gave the Sharks field position, a field goal attempt hit the back of a Wingham player and was picked up by a Sharks player who was well in front of the kicker. The referee signalled six more tackles.
A few plays later, a Port Macquarie player got up to play the ball, and took a step to the right. The dummy half ran and was tackled by the marker. The referee penalised Wingham for not marking up square. The penalty goal was successful, sinking the Tigers by 30-28.
It had been a game of missed opportunities. Wingham had scored five tries to four, and had each half been a minute shorter, the Tigers would have won by ten points.
Congratulations to Troy Atkins and the Reserve Grade team for their 2015 season.
(Tyler Atkins 2, Michael Bailey 2, Jordan Saunders, Brad Sowter tries, Jordan Saunders 2 goals)
