WELCOME to this week’s Wingham Golf Club news and we can safely say the weather has been magnificent and will continue to do so for a while yet. The relatively dry conditions have certainly speeded up the greens and added a lot more run to most shots. As a result, scores have been quite high. In fact one player (name withheld) last Saturday had 19 shots on the tricky par four fourth hole, an indication that the course is the real winner at the moment. If only he had had one more, he would have tied the official club record of 20.

Saturday Taree Toyota Monthly Mug
SIXTY seven players turned out Saturday for the August Taree Toyota Monthly Mug/MRD Electrical Medals/Kangaroofing Long Drives and as mentioned earlier, scores generally were high. Only one player broke nett 70, John Aldous “turning back the clock” to record a nett 69 to win the day. John also of course won the C grade MRD Electrical medal. Congrats John. Other nett/medal winners were Sandy Dunn (A grade with 70 nett on a countback), and Earl Braham (B grade 70 nett on a countback. The C grade nett winner was Adam Buchtmann, also with a nett 70 on a countback. Scratch winners were Brendan Walker (A grade 80), Dave Elliott (B grade 86) and Paul Shepherd (C grade 95). In another indication that the course was the winner was the fact that the last ball winner was nett 75, that of Adrian Yeo.
Nearest to the pins also suffered under the fast conditions, most around the three metre mark. The exception was the “shot of the day” from Adrian Yeo in winning the Wingham Gourmet Meats 3rd/12th hole with a great shot to 60 cm. Other sharpshooters included Brendan Walker on the Wingham Plaza Butchers 1st/10th, Trevor martin the 4th/13th All About Conveyancing hole, Rohan Abbott the Bayview Seafoods 7th/16th and Brendan Walker made it a double after his shot to the Bent on Food 9th/18th.
Wednesday veterans
A FOUR person ambrose was the event this week past and some good golf resulted in a win to the combination of Adrian Yeo, Peter Tait, Terry Thompson and Phil Anderson. They won from Bill Osborne, Geoff Swaffield, Dave Elliott and Steve Seymour. Third spot and not far away was the team of Garry Stackman, Alwyn Elith, Danny Mills and Barry Casey. Phil Anderson had an exceptionally good day also winning the NTP on the 7th/16th. The 3rd/12th was won by John Daly with a good shot.
Thursday LJ Hooker Chook Run
THE fifth and last round of chook runs in July resulted in a win to Peter Axisa and a score that will be “up there” in the record books as one of the best ever chook run rounds. Peter scored 28 points (yes, for nine holes) to win by five shots from his nearest rival, Dave Andrews with “a modest” score of “only” 23 points. Well done Peter. Make sure you check your handicap next week please. It certainly won’t be two shots a hole anymore. Third spot went to retired “schoolie” Alex Kees with 22 points on a countback from fourth placed Ian Scarr. NTP winners went to Bill Cooper on the third and to Graham Troth on the seventh. The LJ Hooker July umbrella winner was fought out amongst only four players who played all five rounds in July, two of those, Beth Braham and Pat Whiteley. Beth won by two shots, 88 to 86 from Pat. Well played girls. In the “masseuse” versus “the handicapper” the “masseuse” scraped home from an unlucky opponent, who is suffering from “retireeitis” at the moment.
