The culprits broke into the building by smashing through the window of principal Nigel Sherrard's office, before smashing through several walls throughout the office and canteen.

Police attended the scene yesterday morning with forensics officers finger printing the area. Police advise that some small items including keys were stolen.

The act of destruction came the day after the school hosted a successful open day as part of Education Week.

"We had a great day yesterday with a really popular open day, so to come here and see this today was really disappointing," said principal Sherrard.

"It's disappointing that they'd target a school."

However, Mr Sherrard said the community had quickly rallied around the school.

"We've had plenty of calls of support from the community, which has been very heartening," he said.

Tinonee Public School is one of few schools in the area without tall security fences, as "we've been pretty fortunate so far."
