Wingham High School PDHPE teacher and year seven advisor, Gavin Austin got a nice surprise on Monday when Newcastle Jets players Ben Kantarovski and Lee Ki-Je popped in to see him.
They were also accompanied by Jet's coach Scott Miller and CEO Mitchell Murphy.
The Jets had been attending a training camp in Taree followed by lunch at the Sicilian Restaurant when new star, South Korean Lee and midfielder Ben were whisked off for a quick detour to Wingham.
Gavin admits he's been a Jets fan since the club was formed in 2000 from the remnants of the Newcastle Breakers club. He was a Breakers fan until then, being an avid soccer enthusiast since he was just a school boy.
It may have been a logistical nightmare to get Jets players to a number of different engagements while in the Manning Valley, but for Ben at least, it was well worth it.
"It's good to get involved with the community," he said.
"It was a good feeling to see the smile on Gavin's face. We wanted to reward his loyalty to the team."
Gavin had been more than happy to watch the team train earlier in the day at the Taree Recreation Centre and had no idea that his Jets experience wasn't over once he got back to work.
"It surprised me, I didn't know it was happening," he laughed.
Gavin is on the Newcastle Jets members' sub-committee which meets every couple of months and he travels regularly around NSW to watch them play.
In fact he was watching back in 2008 when Ben, at just 16-years-old, made his A-League debut.
The youngest player in A-league history to sign a full-time A-league contract, Ben has been a high achiever in the sport his whole life. He said he has been to the Manning Valley on a number of occasions playing with rep teams and training in Taree felt very familiar.
"It is good to come back," he said.
The Jets players and staff were generous with their time while at the school, meeting students, signing autographs and of course getting in on some 'selfies.'
