MY readers may have noticed the lack of notes in last week’s “Chronicle” but I had a valid reason for this as daughter Fiona was in Sydney doing a seminar connected with her cross fit gym in Townsville and she and her dad arranged for us to go down and see her.

It has been almost 18 months since we had seen her and the opportunity was too good to miss but it threw my schedule out the window as they say. We travelled by coach to Newcastle and caught the train to Sydney early Saturday morning and made contact with Fiona when she had finished her first day of the course.
Our accommodation was right across from Hyde Park and our room looked out over the Shrine of Remembrance and it was such a wonderful sight during the evening. Sunday Fiona was off for an early start with her course so we decided to head for Darling Harbour but had to forgo the taxi ride due to the Sydney Morning Herald’s half narathon being held in the area so it was a case of ‘shanks pony’ albeit a slow trip but was worth it.
Unfortunately Darling Harbour is being revamped and much of the area was out of bounds but we did get to walk across the old Pyrmont Bridge – I had hoped to do the 75th Martin Bridge in Taree birthday walk but missed out – and we witnessed the bridge being opened so took lots of photos of this event.
We caught the Sydney Explorer open top bus and viewed many other exciting points of interest in and around the city before alighting at Hyde Park near the Museum and walked the short distance back through the park to our hotel viewing the many monuments in the park along the way.
We all enjoyed our chance to catch up, but Fiona had to fly back to Townsville on Monday morning and we headed for Central Station and the train back to Newcastle where we managed to have a couple of hours of free time, using it to visit John’s cousins Paul and Brenda Scott at Waratah before we caught the coach back home to Taree after a happy weekend.

Tinonee Historical Society meeting
THE May monthly meeting of the Tinonee Historical Society will be held tomorrow, Thursday May 28 at the museum commencing at 7.30pm. Four members of the society, Jenny, Lois, Peter and Sue, enjoyed the opportunity of being part of the 75th anniversary of the Martin Bridge on Sunday May 17 and were able to get a number of photos to add to the museum’s archives. The members are looking forward to good weather on Saturday June 4 when they will be holding their next fundraising barbecues at Masters. The opportunity to conduct these barbecues is much appreciated as all funds raised go towards the upkeep and running of the Museum which is run by volunteers and is open Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday from 10am – 2pm and Saturday 12.30pm-3.30pm and is always looking for more volunteers to assist with the operation of the museum.
Sad times
IT has been a sad time this last two weeks when two well known locals in the Upper Manning, and friends of mine, passed away. Firstly I mourned the passing of Mrs Vida Andrews, wife of the late Warren Andrews of Wingham, on Tuesday May 12 aged just short of her 93rd birthday. My late cousin Ron Williams was married to Vida’s daughter Wendy and she was a very much loved mum of Wendy and her extended family together with son Leon and wife Betty and their family. Unfortunately I was unable to be with her family when they said goodbye at her funeral on Monday May 18 as John and I were on our way home from Sydney.
Another gentleman in every sense of the word, Norman Wilfred ‘Toby’ Polley of Wingham was bid farewell at a service held in a packed Wingham Town Hall on Thursday May 21 conducted by Rev Darrell McKeough of the Wingham Uniting Church. Toby, passed away on May 16, a month short of his 94th birthday and was predeceased by wife Daisy some years ago but survived by daughter Lyn, Lyn's husband Tim Easton, children and grandchildren and son John, John's wife Narelle and their children and grandchildren who all paid wonderful tributes to a much loved father, grandfather and great grandfather.
Toby had served his country during World War II and his service included an RSL component conducted by Wingham RSL Sub Branch president with fellow RSL members forming a guard of honour as his casket was moved from the Town Hall to the hearse for his burial at the Bo Bo Cemetery.
To family and friends of both these wonderful people, deepest sympathy is extended to them and may they have some wonderful memories of good times shared and the love they both gave to all.
School news
TERM two is slipping away and some exciting things are ahead in the next couple of weeks including the annual athletics carnival which is being held at the Tinonee Recreation Ground, Bob Collier Oval on Friday June 5. The day is usually a big event and the canteen committee is looking for lots of helpers to help feed the students and supporters who participate in the day. Help is needed in moving equipment, working on the barbecues, in the canteen helping to pack the lunch orders and the packing up at the end of the day. If you can help please contact the school on 6553 1279.
The school’s junior choir is performing at the Taree Eisteddfod on June 3 with Mrs Bird conducting the group and we wish them every success.
Students are looking forward to their disco in the school hall on Thursday evening and this is sure to be a lot fun with two sessions, K-2 5.15pm – 6.30pm and Yr 3-6 6.45pm-8.45pm and help from parents on the night would be very much appreciated.
Passing of Edna Holz
A MUCH valued and dedicated CWA member of the Wallamba branch, Mrs Edna Holz suddenly passed away after a short illness on Wednesday May 20 aged 84 years. Edna had held the position of branch president for many years and was awarded life membership in 2014 and at the time of her passing held the position of vice president. Edna was a talented lady with her handicrafts and won many prizes at the local Wallamba Show as well as taking out numerous CWA awards with her knitting, crocheting and needlework over the years. Edna was pre-deceased by husband Milton some 15 years ago and is survived by daughters Stella-Marie and Narelle and their families.
Edna’s funeral is being held at St Patrick’s Catholic Church Singleton on Wednesday May 27 at 11am and she will be laid to rest with her husband Milton.
Edna will be sadly missed by her many CWA friends within Mid North Coast Group and I will miss her as well as I have known her all the 50 years that she had lived in Dargaville’s Road, just up the road from our family farm.
May you rest in Peace, a dear friend and wonderful CWA lady known to so many.
