The Manning Valley Historical Society in conjunction with the Mt George Heritage Village Committee, has formed a special committee to develop and present these projects. Committee members include Wingham RSL Sub Branch members and community representatives.
Funds have been received under the Federal government ANZAC Centenary Local Grants Program to enable a facilitator to work with the school children over several months to create costumes of the period, an art display, and a musical performance for both event days. Other primary schools in the area will be invited to come together at the Mt George school for a special commemoration ceremony and display on the Friday before the Saturday community event.
School principal Peter Falla, sees this as a wonderful way to convey the ANZAC Legacy to young children. “We are delighted to be involved with this innovative project. I congratulate the organizers for having the foresight to plan so far ahead and acquire the necessary funds,” he said. Well known local music and drama teacher Ariana Shneider, is the appointed facilitator and will work with the children over many weeks to come.
On Saturday August 15 there will be a street parade, commemorative service, children’s` performance, historic displays and market stalls. There are big plans for music and entertainment, including a special one hour afternoon show entitled “A Farewell to Soldiers,” featuring a variety of local talent. Produced and directed by Maggie Young, the show will highlight songs and stories of the WWI era. Anyone wishing to have a market stall on the day can obtain a registration form from the Wingham Museum or the Wingham Chronicle office.
“Both of these one day events offer wonderful opportunities for local residents and the wider community to become involved,” said committee chair and project manager Mave Richardson. “We encourage everyone to join the parade and wear their own medals or those of their family members who served in any of Australia`s Defence or Peace Keeping operations.” She said.
