WELCOME to this week's Wingham Golf Club report, albeit a very short one due to the consistent and persistent rain over the past week. With the start of the 2015 Country Wide Business Solutions Club Championships scheduled for last Saturday, the condition of the course and the threat of more rain resulted in the cancellation of at least the first round, therefore resulting in the championships reduced to 54 holes, at this stage. However there was some golf played during the week.

DESPITE the threat of forecast rain, a good field of 50 starters played a two man Ambrose last week with very little between the first few teams. Alwyn Elith and partner Alex Kees finally emerged the winners by a quarter of a shot from Michael Parker and Barry Neave, the winning score, 64 and a quarter nett. Third spot went to Terry Morris and Courtney Adamson, a further quarter of a shot back, on 64 and three quarters. Close scoring boys. NTP's were mixed, with Cliff Sayers winning the 3rd/12th with just over six metres and Bill Crockett doing likewise on the 7th/16th with just over one and a half metres.
Thursday LJ Hooker Chook Run
AGAIN the forecast of heavy rain resulted in a reduced field Thursday, but in the end 25 golfers was a good effort to determine the winner of the April LJ Hooker umbrella, with last Thursday the last of the month. The daily winner was Brendon Walker of the "skins" group, recording a fine one under par 35 for 23 points off his handicap of four. Brendon just won however, with young Damian Heywood obviously benefiting from his "old man's" coaching and coming home strongly with a score of 22 points. Another "youngster," Rex White, continues to play well and his 21 points beat several players on a countback for third spot. One of those was Rod Walch, showing a bit of form to finish fourth. In the nearest to the pins competition, both winners needed a trundle wheel to measure their shots, Pat Whiteley (7.68 metres) on the seventh and Graham Steel (8.2 metres) on the third.
As mentioned earlier, it was the final round of April, so the LJ Hooker April "umbrella" was up for grabs, and James Urquhart handled the pressure of leading, to record 19 points for a total of 95 for the month, good enough to beat second placed Sandy Dunn by five shots. Rex White was third with 90 and Mark Fotheringham fourth with 86 points.
Coming events
AS a result of the cancellation of last Saturday's golf, this week is now scheduled as the first round of the 2015 Country Wide Business Solutions. Let's hope conditions improve during the week and all the hard work by the greens "staff" is rewarded. Again, a reminder that the final round of the championships is a seeded draw for those players in contention in all grades. Other events scheduled over the next few weeks include the "Holden Scramble" four person ambrose set down for June 21. Get your name down for this prestigious event. For those players keen on a game during the week, there is an "all week" single Stableford for members and finally our secretary-manager of the past 15 years, Mark Fotheringham, is "retiring" and a farewell dinner for him is set down for Saturday May 16. Details are available from the club. Good luck and good golfing.
