What a remarkable past week we have seen re the weather in neighbouring areas as close as Bulahdelah and Dungog. Record conditions there and absolutely none in the immediate Wingham area. My wife and I spent the weekend in Newcastle with the grandkids and there are trees, big trees, and branches down everywhere. We in the Wingham area certainly ‘dodged a bullet’.
Wingham Beef Exports single stableford Saturday
A GOOD field of 74 players attempted to ‘hone their game’ for the coming club championships and some actually achieved that.
Best of all was young current club champion Reid Brown, who shot a five under par (five birdies, no bogies) 67 ‘off the stick’ for 43 points to win the day. What a round, congrats Reid. Despite Reid’s great score, he only just won with Damian Heywood runner-up with 42 points. This was good enough to win C-grade nett however. Other winners included Bob Polley in A-grade with 38 points and would you believe, Trevor Martin in B-grade with 39 points. That’s something you don’t see every week. Runners-up in each grade were Steve Allwood (A-grade and 38 points), Steve Abbott (B-grade and 38) and C-grade, Neville Boyd with an unlucky 41 points. The ball competition was a mixed one with Phil Hanlen getting the first with 41 points, then the next one four shots away. The last ‘ball’ went to Geoff Swaffield with, would you believe, 34 points (on a countback). Brad Coleman had a good 14th hole with an ‘eagle’ three.
The nearest to the pins were up to their usual standard with “shot of the day’ going to Steve Hatchwell in winning the Bent on Food 9th/18th hole. Other great shots included Reid Brown on the “Wingham Plaza Butchers” 1st/10th, Steve Allwood the 3rd/12th “Caddies Restaurant” hole, Terry Harris the 4th/13th “All About Conveyancing” hole and the 7th/16th “Bayview Seafoods” went to Brad Coleman.
Wednesday veterans
FORTY six veterans played a single Stableford with Barry Miles the winner with 38 points. Steve Seymour was next with 37 points, beating an unlucky Brian Roberts on a countback. “Over Bloody Eighty” (OBE) winner was former North Sydney “Bear”, Barry Casey with a creditable 34 points in the tough conditions. Sandy Dunn has been playing good golf of late and was rewarded with the NTP on the 3rd/12th hole. Cliff Sayers was the other sharp shooter, winning the 7th/16th hole.
Thursday LJ Hooker chook run
THE Thursday LJ Hooker chook run continues to draw good fields with 39 players this week, despite a number of regulars away “on leave”. Scoring was, to say the least, very “hot” with 27 points the best on the day. That came from nine hole specialist, James Urquhart, the club chef, who this week has a new friend, a handicap three less than last week. I hope you get on well together James. Well done James. In second spot, some four shots back, was Sandy Dunn, his 23 points normally winning the day. Third spot went to Shane Allan 22, followed by Rod Brown 21 (one under par round), Rudy Brinkman (21 points), Rex White 21 and Mark Fotheringham in seventh spot with 20 points in a ten way countback. Some people are just plain lucky.
Nearest to the pins were very close with less than a metre for both. The third was won by Rudy Brinkman and the seventh by the consistent Ken Squires who continues to play well. In the LJ Hooker monthly umbrella, with one week to go, James Urquhart leads on 76, followed closely by Sandy Dunn 73 and Ken Squires on 71.
In the “masseuse” versus the “handicapper” grudge match, despite some attempted pre match ‘mind games’ it was another win to the “handicapper”, the score now 7 to 3.
Coming events
THE 2015 “Country Wide Business Solutions” club championships commence this coming Saturday, May 2 through to May 23. A reminder to all players that, for those still in contention at the time, that the fourth and final round will be a seeded draw. Also the “Holden” Scramble four person ambrose for Wingham Golf Club is scheduled for Sunday June 21.
Good luck and good golfing, especially those in the club championships.
