Wingham FC had a busy day hosting 10 games.
Without the help and support of the committee, coaches/managers, kids and parents the day wouldn't have run so smoothly.
With many new faces and volunteers the day was a great success.
With registrations up on last year, we aim to ensure that everyone feels part of our football family.
Wingham FC is looking forward to a successful season.
Under 6 Warriors
WINGHAM Warriors under 6's sponsored by Sheather's machinery played Taree Leopards at Omaru Park on Saturday April 18. What a great start to the season for our new little soccer players with Robert getting our first goal of the season but he was very quickly backed up by Gus scoring the next three goals for the team with some great clear runs down the field Gus also received man of the match for his efforts. Not to be outdone Brock and Blake did extremely well in backing their team mates up with some great ball skills on the field as well. Unfortunately we were down one player this week with Ruan being away so all the boys did well to play a full game and were very tired by the end but they all had a great first game well done to you all.
Under 12 Wanderers
THE under 12 Wingham Wanderers had a baptism of fire with their first competitive game on a full sized pitch at Tinonee.
Player's expectations were high as they have been working hard on technique and control at training over the last few weeks. The pitch was heavy with dew and was freshly cut which really sapped the energy levels. To the credit of the players they rallied hard and showed tenacity and commitment to stick to a structured game plan that was very taxing. Some very good passages of play were rewarded with team goals, the Wanderers passing game looked slick at times with deft passes hitting the mark.
Late in the halves our tired legs allowed Tinonee time with the ball and they were able to hit home some long range goals. Overall the Wanderers played a more consistent game and were rewarded with their first win of the season. Great first up team effort with all players playing their part and coming to terms with a new coach and new system.
Final score Wingham Wanderers 8, Tinonee 5.
Under 13 Warriors
SLOW start to the game for Wingham but warmed up nicely by the second half, started to work better as a team.
Corey scored a good goal in the first half, lined up well by Matt and continued to go on to score the second goal of the match.
Several great saves by the goalie, Logan, who continued to do well throughout the game.
Overall consistent strong play from Cory and Zoe, Naomi, Korey and Marcus, all first time players, made a fantastic effort for their first game. Well done!
Well deserved man of the match to Corey.
Under 14 Warriors
THE first game for the season saw our Saxby Soft Drinks sponsored U14's Wingham Warriors playing at home against Halliday's Point. There were a few new faces on the team and it was great to see everyone working like a well-oiled machine.
It didn't take long for our players to be putting them in the back of the net, and there weren't many shots in the first half that didn't pass the Hallidays Point's goalie. Our first scorer for the day was Canaan, quickly followed up by Nash, Jordan, Andrew and Corey.
Our goalie Sam had decided that he wasn't needed anymore and he pitched a tent up in goals and had a nap…the players on field had pretty much given him the day off.
And the onslaught ensued!
Much to the dismay of Halliday's Point players the Warriors just kept firing, there were a few disallowed goals, but in the end the Warriors just couldn't be caught and the final score ended in, 19-0 Warriors.
Considering training has only just started and this was the first game, once the coach Andy has them working during the week as normal, the U14's Wingham Warriors will be a force to reckon with this season.
Under 10 Warriors
OUR first game of the year was at home versus Green Point Rovers. We have a few new players on the team this season. With three of our players away this week we would like to thank our fellow Wingham U10s team the Wanderers for loaning us a few very valuable players.
The kids took the bigger field in their stride, keeping to their new positions well and working together as a team. Their few weeks of training are paying off already.
One of our new players Bronson scored three goals in the first half and Oliver rounded off our scoring with our fourth goal of the game. Brodie was impressive as goalie in the first half and Cameron and Reid were all over the field playing centres. Green Point was too good for us this time with five goals but coach Brad is very proud of the team.
Ladies
SATURDAY the Wingham Anglican Op Shop ladies played Great Lakes Vikettes.
Well Wingham welcomed back for her first game of the year Anique Morris. The girls went straight on the attack. Unfortunately for Great Lakes Wingham playing at home were shooting at the goals with deadly accuracy. It was a hot afternoon and the heat was taking its toll on Great Lakes.
The first goal went to Georgia Duck. Then Anique Morris and Claire Bird took turns in scoring. Scoring four goals each. Angela Bradley scored a nice header and Amba Brown scoring as well. Two players who had a good game were Nicole Banning playing centre back and Kiaya Easter
Every player really deserves a mention.
The final score being 11 nil. Sorry Great Lakes. When the girls have their eye in they are awesome.
