The team, pictured including Lucy "Goosey", Lorelei "lozza”, Neve "pink boots", Halle "loose tooth", Charli "the dribble queen" lined up sporting matching pink sweat bands, a multitude of coloured boots primarily either bright pink, bright orange or fluorescent yellow and purple, eagerly awaiting the arrival of new signing Annabelle "the lion" whose transfer from Lansdowne came through at the last minute.
The game played at Old Bar's EG Trads field kicked off slightly late allowing the large line of eager onlookers to get through the turnstiles and take their seats.
From the outset both teams battled gallantly against all manner of distractions none least of which were two low flying planes that caught the eye of the Old Bar defenders just long enough for the Wanderers to launch an attack on the Old Bar goal.
Unfortunately for the multitude of generations on the sideline the Wingham players also could not ignore the wonder that was in the skies and the ball went unwatched over the goal line, the planes flew with all eyes on them over the horizon.
All the girls played brilliantly for their first run, tackling, passing and defending with great enthusiasm. By the time the feast of cut oranges was announced the team had amassed an impressive number of kickoffs to their credit and restarted the game each time with an enthusiasm not seen in Mid-North Coast Football for some time.
The team huddle saw the addition of a number of younger siblings sharing in the feast of cut oranges and tactics were discussed at length, primarily about loose teeth and tooth fairy payment options, but whatever was said at half time worked as the second half saw some even more excellent football produced by the girls.
Charli lived up to her new found nickname and dribbled through the entire Old Bar team, beating some players twice to slot home the team's first ever goal, and then moments later repeated the feat!
Lucy, Halle, and Neve acquitted themselves bravely in defence making a number of important tackles, while Annabelle was a constant hard worker both in attack and defence. Lorelei showed her pre-season training with her two older brothers over the last few months paid off with a number of timely interceptions, incisive passes and a well taken goal in the closing stages of the match.
At the end of the game, handshakes, high fives and boys and girls germs were exchanged with the opposition and the remaining oranges were devoured with vigour. All girls proudly raised their hands when asked if they'd had fun and all left their historic first game of football with smiles on their faces.
Coach Gavin "Gav/dad" was immensely proud of the teams efforts and announced at a hastily assembled press conference that the future of women's football in this country better look out.
