The Probus club currently has 74 members and six potential new members and, judging from the crowd gathered in the auditorium of the Wingham Services Club on the day, most of them were there in attendance.

The meeting was opened by Eric Penfold, Director of Probus South Pacific Ltd and Secretary of the Taree Probus club.

The outgoing committee members were farewelled and thanked, and the new committee for 2015-16 elected. Committee positions were elected as follows:

President: Robyn Gibson, vice president: Maureen Mears, secretary: Wendy Kneipp, treasurer: Alan Hughston, programs: Shirley Crisp and Bill Kneipp, activites: position vacant, bulletin: Pam Bennett, welfare: Joan Dickerson, publicity: Hilary Spackman and membership: Bob Bennett.

Mr Penfold voiced his frustration that the function of Probus in the community is often not emphasised and frequently misunderstood. That is, Probus is not a fund-raising organisation as many people think, but a valuable social club for fun, friendship and fellowship for retired people.

The club consists of sub-groups such as photography, mah-jong and a caravan group that go on occasional trips. Social outings and picnics are also frequently well-attended.

Incoming president, Robyn Gibson reiterated the role of Probus in her acceptance speech.

"I feel privileged to be given the role of president of Wingham Probus for the coming year.

"I have an excellent committee to work with. These people have volunteered their time and energy to keep your club active and growing. Please support them in any way you can.

"I hope to be able to welcome many new members into the club, for, as Graham said, that is necessary for our continuation and the vitality of the club.

"I firmly believe in the ideals of Probus. I think the club plays an important role in the social fabric of our town.

"Fun, friendship, and fellowship, and positive thinking shall be our guiding principles," Robyn concluded.
