More than 50 residents gathered at Bobin Hall to watch the film: Fractured Country: An Unconventional Invasion, after which representatives from each road came forward one-by-one, to present the Mayor with their signatures.
A former coal seam gas miner, turned protester, shared his experiences of working in the Surat Basin in Queensland. He described the amount of infrastructure required to extract Coal Seam Gas and the resulting changes in the communities which surround them. He also spoke about the amount of chemicals and water required and his concerns for future generations who will be required to live with the permanent alteration of their local ecosystems.
Mayor Paul Hogan accepted the signatures and congratulated organisers on their excellent community engagement campaign. Every household in Bobin responded to the survey and unanimously declared their desire to remain Gas Field Free. The collection of signatures will be presented at the next meeting of council on Wednesday April 15.
The Lock the Gate movement is growing across Australia and within the Manning Valley several localities are currently being surveyed to determine their desire to remain Gas Field Free. To find out more visit: http://www.lockthegate.org.au/
