MONDAY March 16 was my Aunt Gwen Greaves' birthday and John and I paid her a visit to wish her all the best for her special day taking a birthday cake, card and a photo book I had made of her and Uncle Ted as a small gift. Unfortunately I wasn't able to spend all that long with her but have promised I will be back to see them both soon.
Vale Alf Humphreys
SINCERE condolences are extended to the family of Alfred George 'Alf' Humphreys late of Peveril Street, Tinonee who passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday March 12 aged 84 years. Alf had been predeceased by wife Daph and left to mourn his passing were children Ron, Carol, Kevin, Allen and their families together with his friend Myra.
I had met Alf several times at Anzac Day marches and found him a proud ex-serviceman having served with the Royal Australian Navy.
Alf's funeral was held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Wingham on Wednesday March 18 at 2pm when RSL Sub-Branch members and ex-service persons were in attendance prior to his interment in the Wingham Cemetery.
Rest in peace Alf - Lest We Forget.
St Patrick's Day luncheon
TINONEE and District Red Cross Branch's annual St Patrick's Day luncheon was a huge success with some 64 guests arriving at Tinonee Memorial School of Arts Hall last Tuesday to be greeted by Blarney Castle complete with the 'Blarney Stone' and a wishing well backdrop on the stage along with lots of green, orange and white colours in the decorations.
Guests came from neighbouring Red Cross Branches of Forster-Tuncurry, Mt George, Taree, along with friends from both Taree and Wingham CWA Branches, Taree Quota Club, St Matthew's Ladies Guild and a number of locals who helped swell the numbers along with the Tinonee members.
Entertainment before and after the lunch this year was from a past member, Lyn Payne from Harrington which was very much appreciated and she was assisted by her husband Alvin to set up her equipment.
Tinonee icon 87 yearr old James Gollan also gave a rendition of two well known Irish songs 'Mother Macree' and 'It's A Long Way to Tipperary' with guests joining in on the chorus lines.
Guests took the opportunity to 'kiss the blarney stone' and have their photo taken giving a donation towards the Red Cross cyclone appeal for Vanuatu which had been devastated by 'Cyclone Pam' and this raised $50 whilst the funds from the day's admission and raffle went to the 2015 Red Cross Calling Appeal.
A number of the guests went home with a small lucky door prize and main winners were Marcia Ellis of Tinonee with a plant and Jeanette Holland of Taree won the water jug and glass set.
As usual the Tinonee ladies under the president Judy Cluss excelled themselves with the menu and received many compliments on it along with the presentation of the day and the support of all in attendance was much appreciated for with them the day would not have been so successful.
Weather
AS I sit writing these notes on Monday morning the sun is bright and the skies are blue, so different from early Sunday morning when the skies opened and we had extremely heavy rain all over the local region. I know our gauge held 135 mls but have heard of others receiving much more than that. It was very much appreciated as it has filled all the dams to overflowing and will make for a good season ahead.
Wingham Anglican Parish AGM
DESPITE the terrible weather which greeted all on Sunday morning, there was a good attendance at St Matthew's Anglican Church for the 9am service which was conducted by Rev Brian Ford before the Parish AGM was held in the Fellowship Hall.
Rev Brian was surprized by a group of six friends from his old parish of Kellyville, in Western Sydney who joined parishioners from Marlee, Tinonee and Wingham for the service and meeting afterwards.
Tinonee Historical Society meeting
THE monthly meeting for March of the Tinonee Historical Society will begin a little earlier at 7pm this coming Thursday March 26 to discuss a constitution change so hope to see as many members there as possible.
The members will have an early morning start on Saturday when they hold their first garage sale of the year starting at 8am so all are hoping that the weather will be kind - there is sure to be a bargain for everyone, some bric-a-brac, plants and books.
