WELL, what a week of contrasting weather, one day like Darwin and the next an email to “Noah” penned. The dams of the local farms will certainly be full after that downpour. Onto the golf and last weekend golfers played a single stableford with visitors from Royal Krambach and Rosewood Queensland testing their skills on our beautiful little course.

Billinghams Menswear stableford
AN average field of 56 players played a single stableford with John Hynes the winner by a whopping four shots. John beat home several players on 38 points with one, Mark Taylor, winning A grade nett. Damien Moore continues to improve dramatically, winning B grade nett, also with 38 points. C grade winner was Ron Wilson with a modest 35 points. Runners-up in each grade were Steve Moss (A grade 37 points), Darrin Lewis (B grade 37) and Steve Hatchwell (C grade 35). Big hitting Ben Heywood scored an eagle three on the par five 14th hole, and balls went out to a very modest 34 points, Stephen Foy getting the last one on a countback.
Nearest to the pins resulted in Bill Osborne getting the “shot of the day” with his approach to win the Wingham Plaza Butchers 1st/10th hole. Other winners included Don Schoonhoven on the Manning Natural Healing 3rd/12th, Jason Fowles the All About Conveyancing 4th/13th, John Broadbent the 7th/16th Bayview Seafoods hole and Mark Taylor on the Bent on Food 9th/18th.
Wednesday veterans
A smaller field than usual of 44 players competed for the Terry Morris sponsored single stableford and you needed 42 points to win the day. Two players achieved the 42 points but Phil Hanley was the lucky one, beating John Aldous on a countback. Richard Lucas also played well, his 39 points good enough for third spot. NTP’s were shared by Ron Rae on the 3rd/12th and Bill Osborne on the 7th/16th.
Wednesday ambrose
THE ambrose just outdid the vets this week with a field of 45 enjoying the warm conditions Wednesday arvo. Scoring was also very hot with a score of seven under par only good enough for fifth spot. In fact after handicaps, less than one shot separated the first five teams. Of those “Nobody’s”, captained by Richard Clark, just won from “Bobcats” (Steve Welch) and “Doggies”(Scott Murray) a mere quarter of a shot further back in third spot. Very close scoring. Other winners included Matt Primmer with the NTP on the third hole, Port to a very happy Scott Dwyer, and yours truly won the club $10 voucher. A reminder to all players that there are only two Wednesday ambrose events left before the winter break.
Thursday LJ Hooker chook run
THE very humid weather must have turned away most of the “Chook Runners” as a relatively small field competed for the ‘goodies’ this week. Of those, the club chef, James Urquhart, was the star performer, finally winning with a great score of 24 points (from eight holes after a “bust” on the fourth). The handicapper was finally able to get James who is now a couple of shots “poorer”. Secretary-manager Mark Fotheringham also played well, his 22 points good enough for second spot and seven holes in the “skins” event. Ken Squires also played well for an “old fella” with 21 points for third spot. Syd Gilfillan won the NTP on the third hole as did Jim Bradshaw on the seventh. Due to the small field however, James missed out on a cash prize as Syd’s shot was the closer of the two.
Coming events
THE next few weeks are potentially a very busy period for a lot of Wingham golfers with a single Stableford next Saturday, followed by the Taree Toyota Monthly Mug the following week. Also the Wingham Open weekend is on April 11/12. Next the second round of the “Specsavers” knockout must be played by April 4 and a reminder that the “Night Golf” is on this Saturday night March 28, with nine teams down already to play.
Finally Wingham Golf Club is staging a “Holden Scramble” on June 21.
Good luck and good golfing.
