Guest speaker on the day was Mr Charles Cassells of the Wingham High School agriculture department, who was welcomed by president Irene Henderson.
Mr Cassells spoke enthusiastically about the role his department is playing in preparing school students for careers in agriculture.
Mr Cassells' address reiterated members' beliefs that our district is fortunate to have the Wingham High School farm available as an educational facility for our youth.
Our members have had first hand experience of droughts and floods and are well aware that, with seasonal variations, small scale farming is not a profitable exercise.
Nevertheless, our local school farm is expected to be run on a self sufficient basis and they are certainly up there with the best of other public schools.
We were pleased to be able to present Mr Cassells with a cheque for $220, resulting from members' contributions, at our November meeting in lieu of an exchange of Christmas gifts. This has been an ongoing commitment for a number of years.
The year 2015 marks a milestone for the Manning Women in Agriculture Forum, as it is 20 years since the formation of the group.
It was in 1995 that founding president, Lucy Weller, was inspired to create a meeting place where women with rural interests could come together in friendship to exchange ideas and enjoy a social and learning experience.
Membership remains at a steady leave and over the years there have been many informative guest speakers and field trips to places of rural interest.
We will celebrate our 20th birthday at our next meeting on May 25 at the Wingham Golf Club. Festivities will commence at 10.30am with a morning tea, prior to our usual luncheon.
It is hoped to make contact with as many former members as possible with a view to their attendance. Guests and prospective members would also be welcome. Happily, it will be a relaxed day of friendship and recollections.
