Starlight is calling for more than 2,000 volunteers to paint the streets purple and yellow this Starlight Day on Friday 1 May, selling merchandise and collecting donations nationally in central business districts, train stations and office foyers, or in shopping centres between April 30 and May 3.
Held nationally, Starlight Day is Starlight's biggest annual fundraising event and aims to raise $1.3 million to continue to brighten the lives of sick kids and their families through the organisation's uniquely Australian hospital programs.
Starlight receives no government funding and relies solely on the community to deliver its Starlight Express Room and Captain Starlight hospital programs which distract sick kids from their treatment through play and laughter.
Starlight Chief Executive Officer Louise Baxter encourages volunteers to get involved this May, saying: "Starlight began as a volunteer-run organisation in 1988, and 27 years later, volunteers still play a vital role in helping to deliver our programs into the future.
"Taking part in Starlight Day is a fun and inspiring experience, and with a sick child admitted to hospital every minute of every day across Australia, volunteers can know their time has helped more children to experience our Starlight Express Rooms and has enabled our Captain Starlights to capture the imaginations of more kids and their families."
Individuals, corporations, schools, local businesses and community groups are encouraged to get involved in Starlight Day by volunteering, donating or fundraising. Starlight Day is proudly supported nationally by EB Games and Big W and by Woolworths in South Australia and the Northern Territory.
To find out how you can volunteer and help Starlight recruit other volunteers in your local community, please phone 1300 727 827 or go to www.starlight.org.au.
Volunteer registrations close on Tuesday 28 April at 5pm AEST.
