The perpetual shield is a Federal Members Community Services Award, given to each school in the electorate of Lyne by Dr David Gillespie MP, and the candidate for the award is chosen by the school.
The award was presented to Kyra at the year 12 formal dinner, and she had no idea it was coming.
When asked how she felt on receiving the shield, Kyra replied “like all my hard work has paid off”.
Kyra has indeed been working hard, and has a long list of all of the voluntary work she has done both in school and in the wider community, a small sample of which includes anti-bullying campaigns and blood drives.
She was instrumental in helping to raise over $7000 for the school charity, the children’s ward at Manning Base Hospital, helped by the donation of a quilt her Nan made.
Kyra ran for school leader, but was unsuccessful. But that did not mean she stopped working.
“I didn’t let not getting in bother me and continued to involve myself in all activities possible,” said Kyra.
Kyra even stepped in for school leader duties at times, and a highlight of the year was meeting ex NSW Governor Dame Marie Bashir.
A high achiever, Kyra plans to move to Newcastle next year to pursue a double degree in psychology and history at the University of Newcastle, and intends to work in hospitality to support herself.
