I guess the farmers were smiling when it began.
The only trouble was it didn't last long enough.
Friday night's weather map put a big smile on my face and I expected quite a lot more than we had but any rain is most welcome.
There was not sufficient to end the drought, was there?
Another thing to remember is that with just that much rain the threat of grass fires spreading has not been downgraded at all.
As soon as the fuel on the ground is dry again the danger is right back.
Do keep on your toes regarding this and report any fires you see so they can be investigated and extinguished if necessary and should it be imperative you burn something off on your property be sure to get permission to do so before you light a fire and inform your neighbours 24 hours in advance before you light up.
Birthday wishes
TO end this month there are only four more birthdays which begin with Darcey Dufty.
Next on the list is Margaret Morgan (nee McCarthy).
They are followed by Natarlia Dufty and Cheryl Andrews.
Poor Darcey, you are the rose among the thorns this week, aren't you, mate as there are no birthdays at the beginning of September.
I hope every one of you has a wonderful birthday and does not feel even one day older on your special day than you did the day before.
May the upcoming year be a splendid one for you all.
Red Cross
JUST in case Lorraine Gibson has not managed to get in touch with all our club members I will pass on the invitation we and our "friends" have received which was sent to us by the Wingham Services Club and the Wingham Branch of the Red Cross who have decided to hold the 95th Anniversary of the Services Club combined with the 100 year Anniversary of the Red Cross at the Services Club on Friday, September 19th.
The celebrations will begin with a wreath laying service at the Wingham Town Hall at 11 am and then move to the Services Club where there will be a lunch at approximately 11.30 am.
Those with medals for service in either club are requested to wear them on the day and dress for the occasion is to be semi-formal.
For catering purposes please let Services Club (PO Box 100, Wingham) or Red Cross (PO Box 121, Wingham) secretaries know before September 5 and enclose your $25 fee with your application.
Alternately you may purchase your ticket from the Services Club.
It is hoped this is a well-supported and successful event to commemorate two such wonderful events so please make sure you get your tickets early so you don't miss out.
I guess there will be many interesting stories told on the day.
Many thanks
THE travellers along Black Flat Lane are very pleased to have the road open again.
I've been told the first causeway is now much sturdier and smoother to drive across as well as being higher than before which will mean it is flooded less often.
Many thanks to Council for this improvement.
Can we look forward to having the same improvements to the other creek crossings on the lane in the not too distant future?
We all hope so!
