The event will begin at noon and the War Veterans' Remembrance Drive Association is hopeful the community will rally to attend the event which will focus on the Neville Howse VC Rest Area.

The milestone event will mark the beginning of preliminary works for the remembrance drive which will see around 100 kilometres of road between the Wingham Memorial Hall and the Wauchope Memorial Clock Tower recognised as part of the drive.

Association president Darcy Elbourne says the drive will take "travellers on the hinterland route via Bobin, Marlee, Elands, Comboyne, Byabarra and Huntingdon."

Schools located on the drive route will be "actively involved with researching and telling the stories of war veterans and their families from the area, the victories and many hardships which were endured during the hard times of war and maintaining the family and farms whilst our finest men were overseas," explained Mr Elbourne.

The drive will also recognise Australia's first Victoria Cross recipient, former Taree doctor Neville Reginald Howse VC.

Greater Taree City Council is also involved with the project with mayor, Paul Hogan describing the drive as a "meritorious project" in a Mayoral Minute presented to a meeting of council.

"The Wingham to Wauchope drive is sensational in itself, culminating in the Ellenborough Falls. A centrepiece of the drive will be the Howse VC Memorial near the falls," Cr Hogan said.

"As well as this centrepiece, the memorial drive will feature halls and schools along the route that will provide designated rest areas where visitors can learn interesting facts relating to our regional and military history.

"The schools on the route are enthusiastic participants in the project and the drive will form a memorable Australian historical story that will be able to be accessed by school students in day trips from the Hunter, Central Coast and North Coast. It is also intended to produce an online presence that is available to the world.

"I encourage the community to support the project and in particular, businesses to add sponsorship to the project so that it can be developed to its maximum potential."
