Michael, 57, attended Taree Catholic High and Taree High before studying to become a teacher.
Greater Taree City mayor, Paul Hogan told the ABC that the town is in mourning.
"I spoke to his brother this morning and I knew his mother and father. Everyone is still in shock," he said.
In similar circumstances to the Clancys, Mayor Hogan and his wife Patty have just returned from holidaying in Europe.
"We flew the same route and my niece was on the same flight number just two days before. It's almost beyond comprehension," he said.
Tinonee correspondent, Pam Muxlow reports: "Sympathy, thoughts and prayers are with all the families that lost loved ones in the downing of Malaysian Airlines flight MH 17 and we especially feel for the Clancy family members of Taree and Tinonee. Friend and long time member of Tinonee and District Red Cross, Tinonee Historical Society and Tinonee Friendship Group, Mrs Bev Clancy, aunt of Michael Clancy who along with his wife Carole (from Wollongong) were on board the flight, is feeling the loss of a beloved nephew and we extend our thoughts to her."
