Williams has been named as lock for the Dolphins. He is currently in Canberra training at the Australian Institute of Sport, as a rugby league scholarship holder, and is not due to arrive home until Friday.
Williams trained with the East Coast side at Coffs Harbour a fortnight ago. He is one of five Group Three players in the squad selected following trials held last month at Coffs Harbour.
The others are Port City winger Luke Sinclair, Old Bar’s Josh Woods, Jake Collins from Forster-Tuncurry and Todd Northam from Taree City.
The Dolphins are made up of players from Groups Three and Two along with the Northern Rivers Rugby League which stretches from Grafton to Tweed Heads.
Wingham successfully applied to the Country Rugby League to host the championships last year. All games will be played at the Wingham Sporting Complex.
Eight sides will be involved in the championships. Games will kickoff at 10am on Saturday, with East Coast’s match at 2.25, against defending champions the Western Rams. Northern Tigers, Southern Stingrays, Newcastle Rebels, Central Coast, Bidgee Bulls and Southern Redbacks will be the other teams contesting the championship.
Four matches will be played on Sunday at 9am, 10.25, 11.50 and 1.15 with the draw to be determined on Saturday night.
The four best sides will then progress to the semi-finals to be played on the City/Country Place of Origin match at Mudgee on April 22. From here the winners will move into the final to be played at a date and venue to be announced.
Wingham Rugby League Club secretary Wayne Goward said the sporting complex is in perfect order for the championships which will be the biggest representative rugby league event held in Wingham.
