THE final game of the year Zone 8 RSL bowls was held at Taree Railway Bowling Club, it was the annual "Ray Young" Memorial Trophy presentation day where winners from Championships and Zone games are recognised for their efforts. President Charles Fisher greeted all players and on completion of the Ode, 100 bowlers took to the greens, the usual confusion with players pulling out at the last moment created one problem, we were one player short, fortunately one of our ladies from our committee was able to fill in the missing link and off we journeyed to the greens. All players had a great morning of bowls, plenty of socialising and laughter, on completion all bowlers adjourned to the club house and listening to the chatter all around all bowlers were in fine voice. Lunch was served and the chatter was down to a murmur while everyone tucked in.
With lunch over it was down to presentation of trophies. All winners and runners up who attended were called to the dais and presented with trophies and winners made their speeches, two awards that were competed for the winner of Bowler of the Year and the winners of the Ray Young Memorial Trophy were announced. Bowler of the year was Bob Kirby and none was more surprised than Bob when called to receive the trophy and then the big one, the Ray Young Memorial Trophy was won by Beryl Barker our lady committee member and Ray O'Connell with a margin of 19 points, well done Beryl and Ray, certainly raised a few eyebrows. Presentation over, raffles were run and winners took their bounty and the day and year was all finished.
To Taree Railway Institute Bowling Club, Zone 8 thanks you for your efforts on this day the meal supplied was received very well, plenty to eat, the bar staff kept up the liquid refreshments all morning and the green keeper was able to give us our day even though the greens have been out while renovations were being completed, many thanks. To the bowers that have supported us during 2013, thank you, in particular the social bowlers that keep the numbers up every month, it's a pity that some of the RSL members who choose not to attend did not take a page out of the social players note book and eat humble pie and come back into the fold, maybe they will comeback one day. Till 2014 may the festive season be kind to everyone.
