Wingham v Chatham-Cundle
THE cricket season is here again and the U16s were keen for their first game at home, on a great pitch at Cedar Party against Chatham-Cundle.
With only eight players, Wingham fought hard to go down by five runs in the last over of the day.
Wingham batted first and our opening pair of Ryan Morris and Corey Armstrong started strongly. With the score at 39, Corey was caught (8) and Ryan was on 28 and then he was joined by Ryan Poulton.
Ryan Morris didn't add to his score and was caught by the wicket keeper.
That bought Jesse Newman to the crease and with a 20 run partnership, Jesse was caught for nine runs.
This bought Mitchell Niven in and he started strongly. Together he and Ryan Poulton took to the bowling attack and Ryan hit a big six. With the score after 20 overs now at 100, Ryan was caught for a solid knock at 25.
Mitchell Niven (21) was joined by Reed Brown and together they took the score to 127 after 23 overs.
Reed not out on eight and Mitchell not out on 36 which included three fours and a big six.
With a 10 minute break, Wingham decided to open the bowling attack with spin at both ends.
Reed Brown opened 0/4 off his first over, Mitchell Niven got the first wicket of his first over, bowling left arm finger spinners, and he bowled their opener for a duck. With the score at 1/4, the spinners continued and after nine overs the score was 1/32.
Fletcher Lewis and Shane Manny were brought into the attack and with the score at 54, Couch was bowled by Shane Manny for a well played 24 runs. Fletcher bowled four overs for 13 runs, which kept the run rate of Cundle down.
After 16 overs with the score at 71, Shane Manny took his second wicket.
Ryan Poulton dropped in and took his first wicket in the 20th over and the score was now at 4/102.
With only three overs to go, things looked good for Wingham but with Tom Burley looking to make quick runs, Ryan Morris was bought into the attack.
With five wides off his first over, it wasn't a good start and unfortunately the next three overs put on 30 runs which gave the game to Cundle.
A disappointed team put up a great effort to lose in the last over. Their next game is a two day game against Forster at Cedar Party.
