A 14-year-old Taree youth has been arrested in relation to a bag snatch at Wingham on Monday.
At about 5.10pm on Monday (October 7), a 39-year-old Wingham woman was walking into the front of a supermarket on Primrose Street, Wingham, carrying her wallet in her hand.
Police say as she walked into the front of the supermarket a 14-year-old male from Taree walked quickly towards her, grabbed her wallet from her hand and ran out of the supermarket.
The woman chased the young male along the footpath of Primrose Street. The young male has run down a laneway with the woman slowing and losing sight of him.
A short time later the woman saw the youth when he looked out from where he was hiding in the rear of a medical practice. He then ran onto Farquhar Street, where he had dropped the wallet.
Other members of the community who had seen the woman chasing the youth assisted and gave chase with the young male being caught in Farquhar Street. When the woman and others caught up to the youth she was handed back the money he had stolen form her wallet.
The woman then called police who attended, arrested the young male and took him to Taree Police Station. The young male was released on conditional bail to appear at Taree Local Court on November 5 to answer the charge of "steal from person".
Police say this turned out to be a great result, but always advise caution when people chase off after, or try to resolve matters that may turn violent.
