In good golfing weather approximately 60 starters contested the event with the winning team returning a 13 under par score for a net 49, to win by two shots.
The team, consisting of Paul Shepherd, Phil Hanlen, Cliff and Adam Beattie, beat the second placed team of Rohan, Trevor and Elaine Abbott, along with a 'ring-in' named Jim Weeks.
Third place went to Peter Tait, Terry Thompson, David Andrews and Sandy Dunn on 52 nett.
Nearest to the pins are usually very close but in this event they were obscenely close, all under one metre except one. Best on the day and winner of the prestigious "Caddies" restaurant voucher for "shot of the day" as well as the Bent on Food 9th/18th voucher, was Rohan Abbott. Other winners were Rex Parker on the Wingham Plaza Butchers 1st/10th, Dave Andrews the 3rd/12th hole, Rex Parker again on the 4th/13th All About Conveyancing hole and Adam Beattie on the 7th/16th Bayview Seafoods hole. Congratulations to the winners and again, a big congratulations and thankyou to the Red Cross ladies for their help and organisation on the day.
Wednesday veterans
A GOOD field of 52 starters played their monthly medal day last Wednesday and Neville Hall was the star of the day winning with a 65 nett. Nev just beat Brian Wilson by a shot with Ross Dawson showing some of his old form to claim third spot with a 68 nett. Bill Millward also made a return to golf, celebrating the day with a win in the 3rd/12th NTP with a good shot. Terry Thompson did likewise to win the 7th/16th. Bill Crockett won the putting competition with 29 putts.
Thursday LJ Hooker chook run
THE fine weather also attracted a good field for the Thursday chook run and the run on the course made sure a very good score was needed to win the day. Trevor Abbott was that player, returning 28 points (and yes he only played nine holes), winning from an excellent round from Rod Brown (several under par) on 25 points. Paul Wakeling came in third, his 22 points beating several others on 22 points on a countback. NTP's were unusual, in that not one 'bloke' won one. Beth Braham won the seventh and no-one won the third. Very unusual.
Friday women's golf
FRIDAY Ladies continues to attract good fields and Connie Gates made a welcome return to Wingham golf winning the stableford event from Jan Baker, Jeanette Meanwell, Beth Braham, Dot Clarke, Sharon Juozakitis, Noelene Nelson and Wendy Jones. Dot Clarke had an especially good day, winning the NTP as well. Best of the long markers was Coralie Rowsell. Well played ladies.
Coming events
THE next few weeks at Wingham Golf Club should prove very exciting, with several big events scheduled. Firstly, next week is the October Taree Motorama Monthly Mug/MRD Electrical Medals/Kangaroofing Long Drives and this is the last chance for golfers to be involved in the 2013 playoff for mug/medal of the year. Also this week's mug is one of three stroke events for the Stroke Trifecta. The other two are Tiger Pins on October 26 and the November 2 Monthly Mug. To be in the running to win the Stroke Trifecta, players must play all three of the stroke events. In between these three events is the October 19 Prostate Awareness Day, a 4BBB stableford event aimed at making men more aware of prostate cancer and its' treatment.
A non-golf event happening this week is the appearance of well known bush poet Gregory North at the club on Thursday October 10. Price is $25 per head which includes a magnificent two course meal at Caddies restaurant. Please book. It promises to be a great night of entertainment.
Also today, the Wednesday afternoon ambrose starts in earnest. Run in conjunction with 'daylight saving', this is usually very popular and a good fun event. Teams consist of two, three, four or five players and you don't need to be a member to play. Cost is $8 per player. See you there. Good luck and good golfing.
