WINGHAM Fire Station captain Dave O’Donnell said people are still lighting fires. Despite total fire bans and unfavourable weather conditions, captain O’Donnell said some people are ignoring the warnings and continue to have open fires.
Captain O’Donnell warns this is extremely dangerous and is urging people to adhere to fire bans and to use common sense. Yesterday’s bush fire at Taree raged out of control for many hours, intensified by extreme heat and strong winds.
Wingham Fire and Rescue dispatched both fire trucks to help defend the service centre at Taree South and homes under threat. Captain O’Donnell said most of the homes they were defending had been prepared well by owners “this made our job much easier,” he said. However some homes were put at greater risk because owners had not cleared gutters or undergrowth. Captain O’Donnell is urging people to prepare their homes and have a fire plan in place this bush fire season.
The RFS has not issued a total fire ban for today but the fire danger remains high in the Taree and Wingham areas.
