FIFTEEN rugby league volunteers from four states have been announced as finalists in the 2013 Holden Volunteer of the Year Awards. Among them is local resident Ann Thorburn who volunteers her time for Group 3 Junior Rugby League Inc. Ann and the other finalists are among a staggering 87,629 Rugby League volunteers.
Ann said she feels really good about being a finalist but is quick to say she is not expecting to win. The winner will be announced at the Sydney Town Hall on Monday September 30. Though the winner will receive $2500, Ann is happy just to be a finalist and feels quite spoilt as it is.
She will travel to Sydney with her husband for the awards ceremony on Monday. There they will be treated to an Indian lunch at Darling Harbour after which Ann will be pampered with professional hairdo and make-up. They will stay at the Novotel hotel and be joined at the awards ceremony by their son and daughter who live in Sydney.
"It's pretty special to be in the final when there are over 87,000 volunteers dedicating their time in Rugby League, " she said.
