A 16-year-old Wingham youth has been charged with two counts of larceny after stealing cash from Wingham Senior Citizens Hall and a fire extinguisher from the Caltex Service Station. He was given strict conditional bail and will appear in Taree Children’s Court on September 17.
The youth was arrested and charged by police from the Target Action Group and detectives on Friday, August 16. The arrest followed a police investigation into two incidences in Wingham on the evening of August 1.
The young person attended the Caltex Service Station at around 9.50pm. Police said he harassed the service station attendant, left and then returned but the attendant had locked him outside. The young person then removed a nearby fire extinguisher and left the service station, taking the extinguisher with him.
About 10pm on the same evening the young person then attended the Wingham Senior Citizens Hall. At the time there were a number of elderly persons inside playing cards. He knocked on the locked door and was met by an elderly male.
The young person spoke to the elderly male who walked out onto the footpath, before the young person ran inside the hall and took possession of an amount of cash that had been collected as a door fee.
He ran out of the hall but the elderly victim was able to take hold of him, causing him to drop the cash before he decamped.
