ON Monday, July 22 the Zone 8 bowls day was held at Taree Leagues Bowling Club. Not for quite a while have so many bowlers nominated.
We were limited to 28 teams of fours or 112 bowlers. Up until Friday, July 19 we had 35 teams of fours.
A quick call to the venue Taree Leagues and they increased our teams from 28 to 32. This helped, but we still had to lose three teams of fours or do a draw from the hat to get our quota.
Luckily over the weekend one team pulled out completely and then by natural attrition Monday morning came and we had 32 teams of fours. Then four more players dropped out and we finished with 28 teams of fours and four teams of triples or 124 bowlers – the most we have ever had.
Our committee would like to thank all who turned up and supported this day.
After all the formalities and the reciting of the Ode, skips drew a card from the table and play began, fairly cool weather greeted the players as they headed to their respective rinks. Then the sun broke through the clouds and with refreshments aplenty being served on the greens, it was all systems go, greens were in great condition and once again bowls was the winner.
At the set time of 21 ends bowlers adjourned to the bowls area inside the club and continued socialising until it was time to move to the dining area.
With lunch over, formalities took place and winners were announced they were as follows: M Hollibone, D Connell, B Kershaw, J Black; the wine merchants were next winners, S Dick, G Bynon, N Wright, T Merchant.
The club was handed back in fine condition. Zone 8 would like to thank Taree Leagues green staff for the excellent greens and the extra effort to accommodate the numbers we had, the bar staff who walked the greens and kept a constant flow of refreshments to the bowlers and the bar staff who looked after the players coming in from the greens, the kitchen staff for the prompt serving to 130 hungry players and workers and also our social ladies running the raffles etc, a job well done.
Our next game is at Tuncurry Sporties on Tuesday, August 20. September 16 is social day.
