THE August feature producer at Wingham Farmers’ Market is Sue Paff of Windy Ridge Eggs.
Windy Ridge is a 16 hectare property just outside of Nabiac.
Sue and her husband Nigel have been producing free range eggs there for ten years with a loyal customer base to keep them going.
The chooks live in eight big sheds on the property where they are kept warm and safe from predators such as foxes and eagles.
At 10am each morning they are let out for the rest of the day to forage in the pastures.
Egg production is at capacity during spring and summer. In the peak season Sue and Nigel have 3,600 Isa Brown hens laying up to 2400 eggs per day.
All of these are hand collected and cleaned before being sold wholesale to several local supermarkets, at farmers’ markets, as well as sales straight to the consumer.
Windy Ridge Eggs are trialling Wingham Farmers’ Market as a sale point at the moment.
Everyone is encouraged to come along on Saturday morning at the showground and support them so we can permanently have a certified local egg retailer with the other fresh produce available at the market!
This month’s producer presentation will be by Maureen Larter.
Maureen is another new stall holder at the Wingham Farmers’ Market with a range of honey and preserves from her home at Cedar Party, as well as her books.
Maureen has a teaching background, tries to live sustainably and self-sufficiently, and has been president of the Manning Organic Gardeners Group for five years.
The books she has written include garden guides and children’s stories based on the Australian environment, all designed “to help with health, hope and happiness”.
Maureen will talk at the markets at 10am about what she is up to and what she hopes to achieve.
The community stall will again be selling produce on behalf of backyard growers.
If you have 15kg or less of home grown, spray free produce it can be sold through the community stall for a small commission which goes toward supporting the market.
They will also be selling Annette’s delicious soup, perfect for a winter’s day. Remember to bring your own mug for a price discount.
The Wingham Farmers’ Market is on this Saturday from 8am till midday at the Wingham Showground. New stallholders are always welcome, with site fees waived at your first market.
