ANOTHER week in paradise has seen a phenomenal growth in the grass about the place. With that and the other jobs I have to do at home I and many others have struggled to find time to play. Speaking of grass, a big thank you and congratulations must go to the greenkeeper David Henderson and his great support group of volunteers as the course is in magnificent condition and looks a picture.
Onto the golf and last Saturday a field of 57 players contested the secretary manager’s trophy. Only one player managed to score more than 40 points and that was former club captain Wayne Lewis with 41 hard earned points. Wayne just beat Alex Wilson whose 40 points won him the B grade net.
John Broadbent, won C grade also with 40 points. Runners-up in each grade were Richard Dudgeon in A grade with 39 points, Brian Roberts B grade, also with 39 and finally C grade went to Paul Hanlen with 38 points. Balls went out to 35 with john Aldous the last recipient.
Nearest to the pin winning shots continue to amaze with five out of six less than two metres.
“Shot of the Day” went to Syd Gilfillan with his superb approach to the Wingham Pizza and Pasta 6th/15th. Other winners were Chris Kane on the Wingham Plaza Butchers 1st/10th, Terry Morris the Wingham Remedial Massage 3rd/12th and John Aldous cleaned up on the Bayview Seafoods 7th/16th. Trevor Martin had a mixed day but despite forgetting his handicap on his card still managed to win the Bent on Food voucher for the 9th/18th hole. Vicky might even get a cuppa. Last but not least Glenn Porter won the 4th/13th All About Conveyancing schooner prize with a rather modest shot of nine metres. I didn’t realise the fourth green was that big.
Wednesday veterans had their monthly medal day and again only one player broke 70 net.
Ken Squires “wound back the clock” to record a magnificent 69 net winning the event by four shots from Reg Peters and Dennis Wisely both on 73 net. In the putting competition Adrian Yeo won with 28 putts.
The sharpshooters on the day were Barry Miles who managed to get the ball to within a metre of the hole to win the 3rd/12th ntp as did Courtney Adamson with another great shot to win the 7th/16th.
Wednesday afternoon 46 ambrose players had an enjoyable stroll around our beautiful little course with the “Manning Smash Repairs” team of Paul Latimore, Bob Polley and Russell Evans recording a seven under par score of 29 “off the stick”.
This was one shot off the event scratch score record of eight under. They had seven birdies in their score. Their net score of 25 won by a whopping four shots from the “Chequered Bobcat” team captained by Greg Wilmen.
Third place went to “The Doops” combination, their first appearance on the winners’ dias. Captain of the “The Doops”, Pat Turner, also won the ntp on the third with a good shot, Dave Irvine won the chook and Steve Welch won the six pack.
Thursday LJ Hooker chook runners also enjoyed fine warm conditions with scores a bit lower than normal.
Best on the day was Ian Scarr with a modest 21 points. Ian beat Syd Gilfillan on a countback. Next was Beth Braham on 20 just edging out Mark Fotheringham also on a countback. Ken Squires also won the third ntp as did Beth Braham on the seventh.
Pennant scores this week were very similar to last week with the Division Three team the only winning team again.
They beat Camden Haven three and a half to two and a half. Division one lost to Port Macquarie six and two and divisions two and four had narrow losses.
This week’s event is an 18 hole stroke event. See you there. Good luck and good golfing.
