The annual Champion of Champions was held at the Wingham Rifle Range over distances of 300, 500, 600 and 700 yards.
In the open division, Wingham’s Steve Southwell was victorious over Les Neilsen of Kempsey and Ray Nash of Port Macquarie.
In a close contest, all shooters scored 199/200 with Southwell winning on a countback of centre bulls.
In the under-25 division, Brendan Parkins of Kempsey won with a very good score of 198/200 beating local representative Bronte Thurtell on 197/200.
In the under-18 division, local Bill Blackmore was easily the winner scoring 194/200 from Bryce Drain of Port Macquarie.
Local Ian Young won the F-class standard with an easy victory.
The afternoon consisted of the local championship range of 500 yards.
Peter Thurtell top-scored the range with 100.14, but the outstanding shoot of the day was by his daughter, 15-year-old Bronte.
She shot a club record score in the junior section of 100.11, which easily won her the handicap division.
New junior shooter Georgia Potts had a very solid 89.2 and is showing great promise following in the footsteps of her grandfather and mentor Rob Bartlett.
Former multiple club champion Wilf Wright returned to shooting after an extensive break due to multiple knee operations, to score a solid 98.11.
The 100/100s will be back soon for sure as his knees repair and allow him to lie in the prone position to shoot without discomfort.
Last week, the national championships were held in Brisbane with Wingham sending up five competitors.
Steve Southwell had an outstanding performance being placed fifth in the president’s match scoring 349/350, then fifth in the queen’s prize with a score of 498/500 and third in the grand championship with a score of 847/850.
Steve also won the last range at 100 yards with a 50.8.
Peter Thurtell was 16th in the president’s, scoring 347/350, came 20th in the queen’s scoring 496/500 and 11th in the grand championship scoring 843/850.
Wendy Moon came 19th in the president’s with 347/350.
Barry White in B-grade was 10th in the queen’s with a score of 478/500 won the third stage of the queen’s with 100.11 which elevated him back into A-grade.
He also won three individual ranges at 900 and 1000 yards.
Tony Moon was unplaced in the queen’s with a score of 494/500 and Wendy was also unplaced with a score of 493/500.
This event attracted 200 of the best shooters in Australia, including a field of shooters competing for the next Commonwealth Games positions.
After this event, the annual City v Country event was announced.
Wingham shooters dominated the country teams with Tony Moon being the captain and Steve Southwell, Wendy Moon and Peter Thurtell shooters in the senior team.
Jim Blackmore is the wind coach for the under-25 team and Bill Blackmore, Bronte Thurtell and Nathan Eagles are shooters.
This is the highest number of shooters to represent country from the Wingham Rifle Club in its 126-year history.
Also on the same weekend is the State Champion of Champions in all divisions followed by the district teams match.
The Mid North Coast team will be sending three teams, due to the number of top class marksmen in the district.
