Thurtell outstanding

25 Aug, 2009 01:18 PM
Nine Wingham Rifle Club shooters travelled to the magnificent Belmont Shooting Complex for the Australian titles last week.

Three hundred and eighty shooters travelled from all over Australia, New Zealand and the United States of America.

Peter Thurtell was in brilliant form shooting 498/500 to place sixth in the Queen’s event.

Wendy Moon’s score of 496/500 was only two points behind Thurtell’s, awarding her the 29th Queen’s badge.

There were only six points between first place and the 50th badge which shows the high level of competition.

Thurtell won the second day of the Queen’s with 200/200 and then tied in the third stage of the Queen’s with 100.15/200 but lost the three-way shoot off.

In the international teams event, Australia defeated New Zealand and the US comfortably with Thurtell scoring 199/200, Moon shooting 196/200 and Steve Southwell shooting a 191/200.

In the national teams events, Moon shot for New South Wales and scored 199/200 and in the junior section Bronte Thurtell shot for the National Rifle Association team scoring a 199.200, a brilliant result for a 15-year-old in this under-25 event.

Bill Blackmore shot a good score of 194/200.

On the home front this Saturday, the club event was staged at 800 metres and Steve Southwell smashed the club record shooting 100 with 17 centres out of a possible 20. Jim Blackmore continued his great form and won the B-grade shooting 99.14/100. The C-grade and handicap was won by Keith Gleeson with a solid score of 91.3.
